Terms

Contactable provides temporary private contact links and QR codes so people can receive and send messages without immediately revealing permanent contact details. By using the service, you agree to these terms.

What Contactable does

Contactable lets a user create a temporary public token and a private owner link. Another person can open the public token, send a first message, and, if accepted by the owner, continue in a temporary thread.

The service is designed for short-term contact, such as dating safety, marketplace enquiries, collections, meetups, events, lost property, local notices, freelance enquiries, and one-off coordination.

Temporary service

Tokens and messages are temporary. They may expire automatically, be declined, be destroyed by the owner, or be destroyed from the requester side where that option is available. Once deleted, messages may not be recoverable.

You are responsible for saving anything you are legally entitled to keep before a token or thread expires. Contactable is not intended to be permanent storage, evidence storage, backup, or an official record.

Your responsibility

You are responsible for the messages you send, the tokens you share, and the decisions you make after using the service. Contactable does not verify identity, background, intentions, listings, offers, payments, relationships, meetings, or anything said by another user.

Do not assume that a person is safe, honest, verified, or trustworthy because they use Contactable. Use normal caution before meeting someone, sending money, sharing personal details, travelling, or relying on information received through the service.

No routine message monitoring

Contactable is a temporary message relay, not a live moderation service. Private messages are not routinely read, reviewed, monitored, or verified by us. We are not responsible for the words, actions, omissions, behaviour, identity, or intentions of other users.

Message bodies are encrypted at rest in the database, but Contactable is not end-to-end encrypted. The server application must decrypt messages to deliver them to the correct thread page.

We may take action if we become aware of abuse, security risk, unlawful use, or a legal requirement, but we do not promise that harmful, false, offensive, illegal, or unwanted messages will be detected before you see them.

Acceptable use

You must use Contactable only for lawful, consensual communication. You must not use it to:

• Harass, threaten, abuse, stalk, impersonate, exploit, or intimidate anyone.
• Send spam, scams, phishing, malware, illegal offers, fraudulent payment requests, or misleading messages.
• Share sexual content involving minors, non-consensual intimate content, threats, extortion, or illegal material.
• Arrange illegal transactions or unsafe activity.
• Try to identify, track, expose, or contact someone without consent.
• Attack, scrape, overload, bypass, reverse engineer, or interfere with the service, its bot protection, or its rate limits.
• Use automated tools, scripts, or bots to create tokens, guess tokens, submit messages, harvest links, or waste server resources.

Safety

Contactable can reduce the need to reveal your phone number or social profile, but it cannot make strangers safe. Do not send passwords, banking details, identity documents, private addresses, emergency information, or sensitive personal information through the service.

If you feel at risk, leave the conversation, destroy the chat if appropriate, and contact local emergency services or a suitable support organisation. Contactable is not an emergency service.

Owner links, public tokens, and passphrases

The public token is meant to be shared. The owner link is private and controls replies, acceptance, decline, and deletion. Keep the owner link secret. Anyone with the owner link may be able to control the token.

If you add a shared passphrase, choose something not easily guessed and share it only with the intended person. Contactable cannot protect a thread if you publish the owner link, share the passphrase too widely, or include your real contact details in a message.

Service controls

We may block requests, throttle activity, delete tokens, disable access, change expiry rules, restrict features, or refuse service where needed for security, abuse prevention, legal compliance, server protection, or operational reasons.

Availability

The service is provided on a reasonable-efforts basis. It may be unavailable, delayed, interrupted, changed, rate-limited, or discontinued. Delivery of messages is not guaranteed.

Liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, Contactable is not liable for user content, user conduct, failed meetings, scams, transactions, losses, deleted messages, expired tokens, unavailable service, or decisions made because of messages received through the service.

Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any mandatory consumer rights that apply.

Privacy

How data is handled is explained in the Privacy page. By using the service, you understand that temporary messaging still involves processing the message content and technical data needed to operate the service.

Changes

These terms may be updated as Contactable develops, if the hosting setup changes, or if legal, security, or operational needs change. The latest version will be published on this page.

Governing law

These terms are intended to be governed by the laws of England and Wales, unless mandatory local consumer law gives you additional rights.
